Gerard drags Johnny out for Friday pints, determined his captain will live like a normal eighteen-year-old for one precious year. But over the shot glasses, Hugh and Feely corner Gibsie with a hard truth: either want Claire or step out of her way, because she can't move on while he's standing in it. Saturday brings takeaway, kittens, and a boy who can't stay away from her room.
Raided sideboards, sherry with pinkies extended, and a card-game grudge match give way to Katie's dangerous suggestion: Never Have I Ever. What starts as craic turns razor-edged as the questions cut below the belt and secrets wobble toward the surface. By the end of the night a tipsy, suddenly sad Claire pulls the words 'I love you' straight out of Gerard's mouth.
Claire celebrates landing the job, but the coffee-shop catch-up detonates when Lizzie and Gerard finally go for each other's throats — and Lizzie reaches for the cruelest sentence in the series, about which child Peter Biggs saved from the water. Gerard's answer to everything, as always, is 'I'm always okay.' The Halloween costume fitting that follows is comic relief the episode desperately needs.
Tommen's rumor mill starts grinding: a certain fifth-year named Jamie is working up to asking Claire out, and Lizzie is delighted to warn Gerard off interfering. Meanwhile Johnny confronts his flanker about Dee, naming exactly what an adult woman pursuing a teenage boy actually is. Gerard waves it off — he can't explain why he lets it happen, and that's the most worrying part.
Jamie stops Claire in the corridor and asks her out properly, and she's so nervous she nearly answers in farm animal noises. That same evening Gerard sits alone with a crumpled letter he keeps hidden under his mattress — 'I don't know how to make it right' — before Claire barrels in demanding answers he can't give. The night ends with her as the big spoon and the air between them changing.
The line between best friends finally blurs: in the dark of his room, Claire says the words 'I want this,' and Gerard gives her a night neither of them will recover from. Morning breaks and his POV curdles into self-loathing — he's convinced he's tainted the one pure thing in his life. One desperate call to Cap later, he's sweating his guilt out in a gym instead of talking to her.
