Episode-by-episode discussion of The Creative Act by Rick Rubin — creativity as a way of being, and knowing when a thing is finished. Each episode takes one chapter and turns it into something you can use today. Part of The Ambition Podcasts.
One chapter per episode, in the book's own order. Each episode stands on its own.
Rick Rubin opens by removing the velvet rope. Creativity is not a gift handed to a chosen few — it is what happens whenever something exists that did not before: a conversation, a solution, the furniture moved, a note to a friend. Nothing has to be sold or framed to count. We are all building the reality we walk around in, whether we notice or not.
Information never arrives the way rain fills a barrel. It is strained through limited memory, imperfect senses and a mind that could not process the whole flood anyway. What gets in forms relationships, relationships become stories, stories harden into a worldview. The work of an artist is to hold those stories loosely and leave room for everything that does not fit.
Submerge yourself in the canon — literature, cinema, paintings, buildings. There is no official list and there never was. The aim is not imitation; it is calibrating your own instrument so you can tell good from very good. Even if you are making fast food it will taste better for having eaten well. And of all the great works available, nature is the one that never stops teaching.
Noon is noon no matter how thick the cloud. The information you want is out there whether or not you tune in — and when you miss it, it is gone; tomorrow offers a different awareness, not the same one again. Then: setting. Warhol worked with a television, radio and record player going at once. Proust lined his walls with cork and wore earplugs.
