What she remembers is one detail: she was put here as a prisoner, kept preserved, and one day somebody will come for her. So she endures. She stays alert. When the light finally comes it nearly splits her head open, and someone is screaming. She is pulled out of the dark into a room full of people who talk about her as a specimen — how is this one still alive — while a channel of borrowed energy sings through her like a tuning fork. She learns her situation in pieces, and the most important piece is the metal on her wrists. While those stay locked, everything she is trained to do is simply unavailable to her. 📖
Alone and able to concentrate for the first time, Helena can smell the rot through the walls and work out roughly what is standing on the other side of them. Then the interrogation starts. Stroud is impatient and convinced she is holding back, because she worked in their laboratories and must recognise the woman they keep putting in front of her. The chapter ends with a dismissive wave from the man who runs all of it, and a decision about someone else's future that will shortly become hers. 📖
Rolled back into the lift at Central, Helena counts the floors going past and starts building a map of where she is being kept. Then a motorcar, a back seat, and a destination nobody will name. At the end of it stands the man the whole country is frightened of — the High Reeve, deathly cold and gleaming, more instrument than human being. Fine, she decides. If that is what he is, she will treat him as one. 📖
