Episode-by-episode discussion of Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman — a man, his ex's cat, and a galaxy-wide game show that eats contestants. Each episode covers a stretch of the story, spoiler-free until the recap. Part of Booktok Podcasts.
One chapter per episode, in the book's own order. Each episode stands on its own.
It happens at 2:23 in the morning, Pacific time, and the rule is as simple as it is catastrophic: if you had a roof over your head, you are dead. Carl is outside in a t-shirt, boxer shorts and his ex-girlfriend's pink Crocs, because the cat ran off. Then the world gets stamped flat — streetlamp gone, buildings gone, cars gone — and a wall of information starts scrolling in his vision. He has seen what hypothermia does to a person. So he turns toward the distant light and runs. The start of the strangest, funniest apocalypse in modern fantasy.
A wrought-iron staircase twenty people wide leads down into the light, and the countdown starts: five days until this floor collapses with everyone still on it. Carl meets his first monsters, and the game helpfully labels them — Goblin, Level 2, small, green and smart, making up in spunk what they lack in strength — which is how he learns that everything here is a stat block and a joke at once. The chapter ends with a bulldozer skidding down a hallway and Carl giving two goblins a gesture they understand perfectly before slamming the door.
The door shuts and a notification tells him this is a Safe Zone, with the warning that the level timers are still running. Mordecai — furry, exasperated, wringing his hands — says immediately that letting Carl in was a mistake, which is the beginning of the best mentor relationship in the genre. Carl's response to a threat is pure barroom reflex and lands somewhere Mordecai did not expect. Eventually Mordecai gives up, pulls out a chair, points at another one, and offers the quick version. Carl might as well get comfortable.
The exposition chapter, and it is terrifying. The Syndicate seeds compatible worlds with one of six starter species, waits a couple of thousand years, and then reveals itself — which is what just happened to Earth. Carl learns the economy he is now living inside: sponsors, patrons, loot boxes in bronze, silver, gold and platinum, and the brutal truth that bronze is usually rubbish. Then Mordecai delivers the number that defines the whole series. In centuries, one crawler reached floor 13. He was human. He lasted half an hour.
