Nina's victory has a price: withdrawal that makes her bones feel like they are tearing through her joints, with Matthias keeping helpless vigil and refusing to let her fade. The crew limps home to Ketterdam dreaming of thirty million kruge, and Kaz sends word to Van Eck for the exchange at Vellgeluk. Then Squallers rise off the water, flying on parem, and Jesper reaches for his revolvers.
Dosed with jurda parem, Nina becomes something that makes soldiers lay down their rifles at a word, and her reckoning with Jarl Brum is both triumphant and horrifying. The Ferolind finally slips out of Djerholm with everyone aboard, but the cost is already showing. At sea, Inej offers Kaz the rawest honesty in the book: she will have him without armor, or not at all.
Recaptured and hauled back through the wolf's mouth, Inej falls, and lands on the roof of a massive Fjerdan tank with an idea. What follows is the most gloriously chaotic getaway in the book: Jesper on the big gun, a ringwall gate in splinters, and a column of tanks crashing down the moonlit road behind them. Cornered at the harbor, Nina reaches for the one weapon left: the parem.
The cell door opens and the truth of Matthias' gambit spills out, but the bigger shock waits in the lab: the fate of Bo Yul-Bayur, and a frightened boy named Kuwei with secrets worth a war. As the treasury goes up in smoke and rubble, escape funnels the crew toward the water, and Kaz, held under, is dragged back to the harbor memory that made him. The water rushes in.
Walking the cells with his old commander, Matthias sees what Brum's crusade has become: captive Grisha, doses of parem, and a death sentence dressed up as science. How much of his loyalty is performance now, and how much is left of the boy Brum trained? In the courtyard below, Jesper fights for the crew's escape and spends a hidden part of himself he can never take back.
Detained with the grumbling party guests, Inej engineers her own escort toward the gate and turns a guard's grip into an opportunity. On the White Island, Nina comes face to face with Jarl Brum, the man who built the drüskelle into Grisha-hunting fanatics, and learns what Fjerda plans to do with jurda parem. Then Matthias smiles coldly, locks her in a cell, and calls their debt paid.
Nina sheds her cloak and her backup, bluffing her way through the Hringkälla crowds toward the White Island with no one left to cover her. Jesper and Wylan wrestle the gate chain to the breaking point in a sequence that is equal parts caper and catastrophe. When the link finally snaps, Jesper picks up his rifle and braces for all hell to break loose.
Nine bells, and Matthias leads Kaz, Jesper, and Wylan across the embassy rooftops toward the drüskelle sector, surrendering one more piece of his honor with every step. Below, Jesper and Wylan tackle an absurd engineering problem with laundry shears and nerve. Six people, a thousand ways to fail, and Jesper counting every single one of them.
