On a black-sand isle off every map, the squad burns Trager and Sila together and discovers the land hums with unwarded magic. Violet carefully pairs Xaden away from herself, armed with serum and a best friend, because temptation is now a tactical problem. Then six enormous dragons shimmer out of thin air — sky-blue, feathertailed, impossibly real — and the irids' first judgment lands like a blade: Andarna was never the one being tested. Violet was, and she failed.
The irids refuse the war, declare there is no cure for venin, and call Xaden an abomination to his face — then bar Andarna from their isle as irid in scale and name only. Ridoc saw the red flare in Xaden's eyes, and his price for silence forces Violet's secret toward the people she loves most. The long flight home ends with a letter from Theophanie claiming she already holds what Violet seeks, and worse news still: Queen Maraya is dead.
