Nine failed sessions on the chimney and one night left to decide whether to run to the Scribe Quadrant. We cover the plan Violet builds instead of running, the way she finally beats the Gauntlet by cheating the route rather than her body, and the challenge she wins on a technicality using Xaden's own words against Amber. She only notices she's shredded her palms raw when someone points out she's leaking.
Presentation parades what's left of the first-years past dragons who are openly weeding out the weak, and Violet walks it with her squad's eyes on her. Yarros gives us Kaori's rules — never look a red in the eye, never back down from a green — and then puts a small golden feathertail at the very end of the line, a breed no scholar believes will ever bond. Two cadets don't walk off that field.
October first is Threshing, and Violet walks into the valley with nine daggers and no idea which dragon is calling her. What she finds instead is Jack and two friends hunting the feathertail for sport, because letting something weak live offends them. We take the standoff beat by beat: three swords, twenty feet of open ground, and Violet stepping in front of a dragon she has no business defending.
Violet is seconds from dying for a dragon she just met when the valley goes dark — the unbonded black from Kaori's lecture steps over the golden one and tells her attackers to move. We cover what Tairn is, why he hasn't chosen a rider in five years, and the bond that forms anyway. Then he launches, and Violet discovers that staying on a dragon is a separate test she hasn't passed.
Violet is in free fall over the mountains when Tairn's claws close around her ribs and he tells her, bored, that she's making them look bad. We unpack the flight to the field, the compliment he gives her before they land, and the roar of deference from every dragon there. Then the roll-keeper writes down his name — and a second, sweeter voice in Violet's head insists she write down hers too.
Generals scream at each other on the dais while an instructor stitches both sides of Violet's arm, because nobody alive has bonded two dragons. We cover what Tairn and Sgaeyl being a mated pair means for her and Xaden, the account she gives Dain of the valley, and the detail in it that makes his voice change. Then Dain finally kisses her, after years of waiting, and she realises she doesn't want it anymore.
