Months after the book came out, the emails started arriving — people who had tried the framework on real problems and wanted to report back. This episode works through them: Eric, who had quit smoking a dozen times with affirmations, gum, exercise and written goals and relapsed every time, and what was actually wrong with how he was trying. Alongside him, the readers who used the loop on weight loss, on chronic procrastination, and on teaching. It is the most practical hour in the book because none of it is theory: it is the diagnosis stage going wrong and being corrected, over and over.
Everyone wants the secret formula, and Duhigg is blunt that there isn't one — there is a framework, and it requires experimenting on yourself. This closing episode is the whole method, step by step: identify the routine you actually want to change, test rewards one at a time to find out what you're really chasing, isolate the cue from among the five categories every cue falls into, and then write the plan down. Duhigg walks his own cookie habit through it in public. Some habits take a long time and repeated failures. But once you can name the cue, the routine and the reward, you have power over it.
